There’s a new song for Sunday. You have the audio, maybe an MP3 your worship leader sent you or a phone recording from rehearsal, but no chords. So you spend the evening pausing and replaying it, working out the progression by ear and typing the lyrics line by line.

Audio to ChordPro is here to give you those hours back. Upload the audio file and a few minutes later you get a ChordPro file with the lyrics transcribed and each chord already above the right syllable.

It’s live on the website now: praisetune.com/en/audio-to-chordpro. Nothing to install, and you don’t need the app.

It’s a beta, in early access

Let’s be upfront: Audio to ChordPro is a beta feature. It works and we use it, but it’s still young, and that means three things.

  • Check the result. The transcription is automatic and does most of the work for you, but a chord or a word may be off here and there. It’s always worth listening again and fixing anything that sounds wrong.
  • Sometimes you’ll wait. Songs are processed one at a time, in a queue. When many requests come in together, yours waits its turn. You can close the page and come back later: the song stays in your list.
  • Things may change. Packs, limits and features may evolve as we improve it.

Why it’s paid

Unlike many PraiseTune features, every converted song has a real cost: transcribing the lyrics and recognizing the chords take services and computing power that we pay for song by song. That’s why there’s no unlimited subscription: you only pay for the songs you convert.

PraiseTune is an independent project. When you buy a pack of credits you’re not just converting songs, you’re supporting the development of the app and of this feature while it’s in early access. Thank you to everyone who does: it’s what keeps us going.

How it works

1. Sign in

Go to praisetune.com/en/audio-to-chordpro and sign in with Google or with your email: you get a 6-digit code and you’re in. It’s the same account as the PraiseTune app, but you don’t need the app to use the page.

New accounts get 1 free song, so you can try it before deciding.

2. Upload the song

Drop the file on the page or tap Choose a file. These work:

  • MP3, M4A, WAV, AAC, OGG and FLAC;
  • MP4 and MOV videos, like a video from rehearsal;
  • phone recordings.

The limit is 15 minutes and 200 MB per file. Upload one song at a time: a whole setlist in a single file won’t work.

3. Wait a few minutes

The song joins the queue and a progress bar shows how far along it is. It usually takes a few minutes. If you like, close the page: when you come back you’ll find it under Your songs.

4. Download the ChordPro

When it’s ready you see the result on the page. You can copy it or download it as a .cho file.

What you get

A ChordPro file is plain text: chords sit in square brackets exactly where they change. For a song like Amazing Grace the result looks like this:

{title: Amazing Grace}

[G]Amazing [G7]grace, how [C]sweet the [G]sound
That saved a wretch like [D]me
I [G]once was [G7]lost, but [C]now am [G]found
Was [Em]blind but [D]now I [G]see

You don’t just get the chord progression: you get the full chord sheet, with the lyrics transcribed from the audio. It works with songs in English, Italian and many other languages.

The file opens in PraiseTune, where you can fix it in the editor, transpose it in one tap and add it to a setlist. It also opens in any app that reads ChordPro, like OnSong and SongbookPro, and in any text editor.

If your songs are on paper or in PDFs instead, there’s another way: how to convert a PDF to ChordPro.

How much it costs

You pay with credits: 1 credit is 1 song. During early access the packs are:

  • 10 songs for €2.99
  • 30 songs for €6.99
  • 100 songs for €14.99

Prices include VAT and payment goes through Stripe. Also:

  • no subscription and no auto-renewal;
  • credits never expire;
  • if a conversion fails, you get the credit back automatically, and we tell you why;
  • if you need a refund for a purchase, email us within 14 days at support@praisetune.com.

What happens to your audio file

We only use it for the conversion and delete it from our servers as soon as the song is ready. We keep the ChordPro, so you’ll find it in your list when you come back.

Try it and tell us how it went

The best way to help us during the beta is to use it and tell us what doesn’t work: a wrong song, an odd chord, a wait that’s too long. Email us at support@praisetune.com, we read everything.
